The Refugee Crisis in America

On Friday, January 24, in an unprecedented move, the federal government issued a stop work order for all work associated with the refugee resettlement and placement program. This means that refugees that are here, with protected legal status, are no longer going to be given the core services that they’ve been promised. The rent they were promised? Gone. The food money they need? Gone. All funding for this program is frozen, including payroll for resettlement case workers.

When we think refugee, we probably do not think about the United States, but the refugee crisis is now here in our backyard. Over 30,000 refugees are currently in the US within their 90 days of services, and are suffering this new injustice.

One article stated the dire situation plainly:

“You got here a week ago, under the wire, you know your case manager for three days. And now you’re not allowed to call them to get support from them.”

I host a podcast, and this week, we recorded an episode all about refugee resettlement and the current crisis we find ourselves in, and how believers can respond. Feel free to check it out HERE.
